Replace or add grommets yourself to tarps, tents and awnings with this .5-inch grommet kit from General Tools. Each kit contains 24 1/2-inch solid brass grommets with a hardened steel hole cutter and hardwood backer block. For added convenience, there's also a mandrel with a knurled body for greater comfort and safety, and a matching anvil. Both are made from hardened steel and coated with black oxide to ensure the grommet pieces are securely and permanently joined. In addition, the rings on the anvil and mandrel match to make it easy to identify size.
This kit is great for fixing canvas tents, sailcloth and lawn furniture. It also can be used to repair a wide variety of fabrics and other materials. For added convenience, grommet refills are also available.

Overall a decent value and it does what it should: helps you install shiny grommets. The metal tools are heavy and seem good quality. They make a satisfying clanging sound when you bash them violently with your hammer.
As other reviewers note, with this kit you will only have the pleasure of installing 12 grommets, not 24. I found a refill kit at the local hardware store.
Besides that, three minor complaints:
1. The hole puncher tube was too dull to actually punch holes through the fleece I was trying to engrommenate. It was easier to cut the holes by hand. (I also have the 3/8" kit and for some reason that tube was a lot sharper and more useful.)
2. The metal tools were covered in grease which I didn't see at first and it left black marks on my stuff.
3. The wooden backer block is pretty useless. It splintered in two almost immediately.
Overall though I thought the kit was a pretty good value.
Great Item! (2008-10-23)
It is difficult to find solid brass grommets in hardware stores so I was thrilled to find this item. It truly is 100% brass (I tested it with a magnet). Used this set to make a custom shower curtain. Humidity = rust so that's why it was imperative for it to be 100% brass. It's easy to use and everything works great EXCEPT instead of 12 grommet sets, I got 11 sets + 2 washers.
Grommet Kit (2008-09-03)
The tools seem higher quality than most kits, but the grommets do not seem to be any heavier duty than other kits. They seem ok, not great. My biggest complaint is the description indicated twice as many gommets included, as actually came with the kit. It only came with 12.
excellent to have on hand (2007-08-18)
I've used this kit for many years. It's not that hard to use IF you have a good set of tools (large hammer/heavy work table). it's just one of those things handy "men" ought to have around! Only downside I can see is that I haven't found a source for grommet refills yet.

I only used it once, it's difficult to figure out. Don't lose the directions.
